Gwen Crenshaw, Department of African American & African Diaspora Studies, IUPUI, and marker applicant, introduced the honored guests at the John Freeman historical marker dedication in Indianapolis, October 29, 2006. Participants in the ceremony included Reverend David Greene and the Second Baptist Church choir, the Honorable Julia Carson, Tony Kirkland representing Governor Mitch Daniels, the Honorable Patrice Abduallah, City of Indianapolis and Marion County City-County Council, and Robin Shackleford, Director of Diversity, Mayor's Office.

The crowd learned about John Freeman and his place in Indiana history following the passage of the 1850 federal Fugitive Slave Act from Ms. Crenshaw, Dr. Lewis Galloway, Senior Pastor, Second Presbyterian Church, and the Honorable Carr L. Darden, Judge, Indiana Court of Appeals.

After the unveiling of the marker, the public was invited to a reception at the Kemper House, 1028 N. Delaware, courtesy of WTHR and Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana. The location of the marker on Pennsylvania Street between 10th and 11th Streets was provided by the Landmark Center, REI, at 1099 N. Meridian St.
