The Indiana Civil Rights Commission, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Indiana Holiday Commission and the Indiana Black Expo, Inc. are proud to congratulate Celeste Ledezma, a junior at Manual High School in Indianapolis, for winning the first annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Art, Writing and Multimedia Contest.
Ms. Ledezma will receive the prestigious Passing the Torch award from Governor Mitch Daniels and a $500 college scholarship courtesy of Indiana Black Expo, Inc. The awards will be presented to Ms. Ledezma at the 21st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Indiana Holiday Celebration on Thursday, January 12, 2012 at the Indiana Statehouse in Indianapolis.
Hundreds of entries were received from high school students around the state. This year’s contest focused on what Dr. King believed to be life’s most constant and persistent question: “What are you doing for others in your community?”
Students were asked to use either art, writing or multimedia to highlight a community service project they are currently or have been apart of. These projects ranged in scope and complexity but one thing was evident: Dr. King’s words continue to motivate young people to serve their community.
Many of the entries, including Ms. Ledezma’s winning project, will be on display in the Indiana Statehouse Rotunda at the 21st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Indiana Holiday Celebration on Thursday, January 12, 2012.
