The vital records division is charged with the responsibility of preserving, filing and issuing certified copies of birth and death records that have occurred in Blackford County. This division can also be of assistance with genealogy and related resources.

Vital Records FAQs

  • How can I pay for a birth or death certificate?

    We accept credit/debit cards, cash, money order and personal checks.

  • How long does it take to get a birth or death certificate?

    If you come into the office the certificate can be issued while you wait, usually within 10-15 minutes. If you mail your request it will usually take 1-3 business days to process the order. To expedite mail requests an overnight prepaid envelope may be sent for return of document.

  • If I was not born in Blackford County, may I obtain my certificate from this office?

    No, you have to go to the county in which you were born.

  • If there is an error on my birth certificate, how do I get it corrected?

    Call and speak with the Registrar about the error to determine the next steps for correction.

  • Who can request a birth or death certificate?

    Qualified applicants must have a direct interest, a documented and verifiable financial and legal interest, or an immediate direct kinship (parent, adult sibling, or grandparent) to the person named on the record. This is in accordance with Indiana Code (IC) 16-37-1-10, IC 16-37-1 (11) and IC 16-37-1(11.5).
