Lesson 1: What are Data and Data Literacy?
The Data Proficiency Program training lessons are now available to state employees. Upon completion of each section quiz badges will be emailed from mph@subscriptions.in.gov. We welcome all state employees to sign up via their state email account to receive future updates and news about our Data Proficiency Program. Subscribe to our mailing list to stay in touch with us.
Whether it is filling out a customer intake form, using restaurant reviews to decide your dinner destination or reviewing the latest operational dashboard at your agency, each of us uses data on a daily basis to learn and guide our decision-making. Often, we interact with data without realizing it.
Each of us, both in our personal and professional lives, can improve our data awareness and skills. The Indiana Management Performance Hub (MPH) wants to help. We are committed to providing lessons, articles and exercises to help all state employees skill up in data and to further the data-driven culture with the State.
To get started, let’s learn more about what data is exactly and how it impacts us. Watch the video lesson, at right, that comes from the Study Hall: Data Literacy series released in September 2020 by Arizona State University as part of the popular Crash Course learning channel on YouTube.
Now, let’s think about how data impacts us in the workplace. Whether it is entering time into PeopleSoft or completing a digital form for our citizens, accuracy is important and can skew results at every step throughout the process.

This is just the start to improving your data knowledge and skills. MPH looks forward to continuing this journey with you.
