You made it! You've reached the final lesson of the Data Proficiency Program by the Indiana Management Performance Hub (MPH). After finishing this lesson, you can take a quiz to earn your third badge.
There are many places to get data, like online databases, government repositories, and special data hubs. Open data is quite useful for those looking to explore and analyze data for learning or research purposes.
Here in state government, MPH hosts the Indiana Data Hub. It has useful data kept securely, without personal details, and is available to the public. State agencies also share open, public data on their websites. At the federal level, Data.gov is a comprehensive resource with data from different U.S. government agencies.
If you're looking for government data, the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) is a powerful tool for gaining access to government information, although there are instances where data may not be accessible even through a FOIA request. Lesson 16 will explore this, looking at how we balance the public's right to know with protecting certain interests and keeping the government working well.
A Final Word
Thank you once more for finishing the Data Proficiency Program by Indiana MPH. In this program, you've gained important knowledge and skills for dealing with and making sense of data. The series covered various topics in data literacy, like grasping different data types, exploring where data comes from, understanding charts and graphs, and learning some basic data analysis techniques. We hope you take away an understanding that the collection, organization and analysis of data is a part of all state employees’ daily activities.
Lastly, the world of data keeps changing as new sources and tools come up. Staying open to continuous learning helps you adapt and keeps your data skills up-to-date. MPH is excited to be part of your data literacy journey, supporting employees across the state in understanding their role in data and helping them improve their skills.
