Summer Safety

The Clermont Police Department serves and protects the town’s 1,400 residents and its neighbors. Follow these tips for a safe summer:

HOMEOWNERS
  • Keep exterior doors in your home closed and locked including your garage doors. An open door is an invitation.
  • Be a good neighbor and alert police to any unusual activity in your neighborhood.
  • Avoid home improvement scams and deception burglaries by taking a proactive approach. Be alert to anyone in your neighborhood looking to perform repair and seeking to gain entry into your home. Ask to see ID and let them know you are going to call and get verification from their company before allowing them inside. If they are legitimate, they won’t mind the wait.
  • Plan for vacation by having your mail held at the post office or having a neighbor pick it up. Leave inside lights on timers to create the impression your house is occupied while you are away, and set your alarm system. Have a neighbor or lawn service mow your lawn. Remember to notify CPD at 317-291-0416 (if you live in town limits) to set up extra patrols until you return.
DRIVERS
  • Don’t leave valuables in your car. If you must, lock them in the trunk so they are not visible.
  • Drive safely and slowly, especially near parks and playgrounds. More children are out playing and riding bicycles in the summertime.
  • Please do not drive distracted. Remember cell phone are a leading cause of accidents, often leading to catastrophic results.
  • Be alert to children playing. They may be more concerned about retrieving a ball that rolls into the street than watching for your vehicle coming toward them.
PARENTS
  • Provide a list of hone numbers of neighbors, family, and friends that your child can call in an emergency. Make sure younger children know how to dial 911 and when it is appropriate to do so.
  • Know the route your child will take to and from a given location. Remind your child to never take a shortcut or deviate from the agreed-upon route.
  • Establish rules for using the Internet. Children should have adult supervision when online. Make sure your child knows never to give out personal information.
  • Require your child to check in with a parent before leaving the house and when returning home. Teach your child there is safety in numbers and that it is best to be with a group of friends when going places without an adult.
  • Provide a bike helmet and require your child to use it, and dress them in brightly colored or reflective clothing if they will be going for a ride.
  • Children should not be outside after dark without an adult. Please know where your child is at all times, who they are with, and what they are up to.
