The following measures should be taken BEFORE going into an area where ticks may be present:
- Wear light-colored clothing to detect ticks
- Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants
- Tuck shirts into pants and tuck pants into socks
- Wear closed-toed shoes
- Wear a hat to cover hair
- Use an EPA-registered insect repellent containing DEET on clothing and skin
- Apply permethrin to clothes and shoes (DO NOT apply to skin)
- Apply a pet-safe tick repellent (consult with your veterinarian)
The following measures should be taken AFTER going into an area where ticks may be present:
- Check your entire body for ticks after leaving the area
- Shower as soon as possible
- Wash clothes in hot water and dry on high heat
- Check your pet thoroughly for ticks
