Data security is the practice of protecting sensitive information from unauthorized access, use, disclosure, disruption, modification, or destruction. It encompasses a range of measures and controls that are implemented to safeguard data and ensure its confidentiality, integrity, and availability. As state employees, data security practices aren’t limited to your time on the clock. You should be taking the necessary steps to secure your personal data in your private lives as well.
In the video lesson from the Study Hall: Data Literacy Series you’ll learn about the harm that data breaches, hackers and phishers can cause and tips for keeping your data secure.
The lesson also explains how data security is critical for organizations of all sizes and industries, as data breaches can result in significant financial losses, reputational damage and legal consequences.
Each October, Governor Holcomb designates Cybersecurity Awareness Month in Indiana along with the Indiana Office of Technology and Indiana Department of Homeland Security. These yearly initiatives encourage and educate Hoosiers to follow cybersecurity best practices. But rest assured, data security is a “24/7, 365” job for all of us.
Indiana lawmakers passed a Cyber Incident Reporting Law in 2021 that requires public-sector entities to report incidents such as ransomware, software vulnerability exploitations, denial-of-service attacks and more.
