Lake County Facts

The county was named after its location along Lake Michigan. Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore finds its home along Indiana’s 40-mile-long Lake Michigan shoreline — Lake County is one of three Indiana counties along the Great Lake.

About the courthouse: John Cochrane was the architect and the building was completed in 1879.

Paul Samuelson, born in Gary, Indiana, in 1915, won the Nobel Prize in economics, 1970.

Carefully loading the M-4 Tank onto a rail car.In addition to railroad cars, the Pullman Standard Car Company was called upon to produce military arms and vehicles. The M-3 and M-4 Sherman tanks were built in south Hammond near 165th and Columbia. The company provided high paying jobs for the region and a great deal of patriotic pride and helped win World War II.

The corner window at Goldblatts, in Hammond, always presented the newest toys for the holiday season — as featured in Jean Shepherd’s Christmas Story.  It is where Ralphie first saw the Red Ryder BB gun. Goldblatts always had electric trains on display.

In 1934 Chicago Gangster John Dillinger escaped the Lake Country jail in Crown Point by using a “pistol” he had carved from a wooden block.
