Sustainability

CityBus is committed to making environmentally responsible choices, minimizing use of our natural resources and continually adopting new sustainability practices. As improved sustainability methods emerge, CityBus pledges to be at the forefront in adopting use.

Bringing Hydrogen Fuel Cell Buses to Indiana

In 2023, CityBus was awarded $7.6 million under the Federal Transit Administration's Low-and No-Emission Vehicle program. In 2024, CityBus received an additional $10.5 million award under the same program. These grant awards mean CityBus will be the first transit agency to operate hydrogen fuel cell technology in the State of Indiana.

The grants will fund the procurement of state-of-the-art hydrogen fuel buses, the development of the necessary infrastructure, such as hydrogen refueling stations and maintenance facility modifications, and workforce training programs for CityBus employees. CityBus anticipates the first round of hydrogen fuel cell buses will be in service in Spring of 2026.

Proven Commitment to Operating Low-Emission Buses

In 2014, CityBus purchased its first 10 buses powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) rather than diesel fuel. This helped us lower emissions, use domestic rather than foreign energy and reduce costs. An onsite fueling station also contributed efficiencies.

In 2006, CityBus purchased diesel-electric hybrid buses, first bringing alternative fuel vehicles to the agency. Over the next eight years, CityBus added a total of  twenty diesel-electric hybrid buses to the fleet.

Tapping Wind Power, Reducing Electricity Use

In 2009, CityBus secured funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act’s Transit Investments in Greenhouse Gas Energy Reduction program to purchase and install three wind turbines. Since becoming operational in 2011, the wind turbines have generated power to supply our administrative office and maintenance facilities, reducing consumption of electricity generated from fossil fuels.

Further electricity reductions have been achieved through use of LED lighting, dusk-activated lighting, hand dryers, and motion-sensitive lighting.

Recycling, Implementing Sustainable Practices

CityBus has long followed reduce - reuse - recycle practices in our facilities and offices. We make purchases with this in mind, print only when necessary to reduce paper and toner use, and collect recyclables, among other saving measures.

Installing Rain Gardens

Landscaping on CityBus properties includes installation of rain gardens, which filter water before it enters the storm water system and add nature settings to the environment.

Using Low-Maintenance Building Materials

Both inside and outside, CityBus facilities are built and furnished with sustainability in mind. Some applications include Terrazzo flooring, ceramic wall tiles and low-maintenance brick exteriors.
