This INDOT project involves the repair and reconstruction of the eastbound and westbound lanes of Interstate 70 east of Indianapolis from Mt. Comfort Road to State Road 9 in Hancock County.
Plans call for I-70 from 0.5 miles east of Mt. Comfort Road to 0.8 miles east of S.R. 9 near Greenfield to receive full-depth pavement replacement in the eastbound concrete lanes and repairs and resurfacing in 
sections that are paved with asphalt. Concrete sections in westbound I-70 will be extensively patched while the asphalt section will be repaired and resurfaced.
The I-70 bridge over the Sugar Creek bridge in Hancock County will be widened. The westbound on-ramp from S.R. 9 to I-70 will be extended.
INDOT accepted a low bid of $15.2 million from Milestone Contractors, of Indianapolis, Ind., for construction of this 8.5 mile Major Moves project. Lane closures and alterations to traffic patterns began July 2, 2013.
Project Scope
The reconstruction work on I-70 is divided into sections:
From Mt. Comfort Road to Sugar Creek:
- Eastbound I-70 lanes will be completely reconstructed.
- Westbound I-70 travel lanes and shoulders will receive full depth patching within several defined sections.
From Sugar Creek to Fortville Pike (Brandywine Creek):
- Sections of pavement will be rehabilitated.
- EB and WB lanes will receive surface grinding.
The bridges carrying I-70 eastbound and westbound lanes over Sugar Creek will be rehabilitated and the existing bridge decks will be replaced.
The S.R. 9 on-ramp to I-70 will remain open during project, but one lane of the ramp will be closed. The current on-ramp does not meet INDOT requirements. This ramp section will be extended onto I-70 and the acceleration length will be lengthened.
Traffic Management
This project will involve both daytime and nighttime construction. Temporary barriers and shoulder and lane restrictions will be used during construction.
INDOT reminds drivers to use caution and consider worker safety when driving through a construction zone.
