The Indiana Gateway rail project improved passenger rail service in northwest Indiana between Porter, Ind., and the Illinois state line. Construction of the project began in 2013 and was completed in March 2017.
The project was the result of a Public Private Partnership between the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Norfolk Southern, Amtrak and INDOT. INDOT was awarded $71.4 million for final design and construction of the project from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The project began with the submittal of an application to the FRA in 2009, Notice of Project Selection in 2010, and Construction Agreements in 2012.
